​Two Teams With Something to Prove

Spring Mills finished the 2025 regular season at 6-4 before making a deep postseason run.

The Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinals, where they faced the eventual WVSSAC Class AAAA state champions, the Morgantown Mohigans.

What followed was one of the most dramatic games of Spring Mills’ season.

The Cardinals battled Morgantown into double overtime, ultimately falling by just one point in a heartbreaking finish.

For Spring Mills, it was a painful way to see the season end but it also showed just how close this program was to competing with the best in the state.

Jefferson’s season took a very different path.

After opening the regular season 0-4, the Cougars completely turned things around, winning six consecutive regular-season games to finish 6-4.

That momentum carried into the playoffs.

Jefferson went 2-1 in the postseason, advancing to within one game of the state championship game before eventually falling to Morgantown.

And that Morgantown connection is worth remembering.

The Mohigans defeated Spring Mills in double overtime by one point before continuing their postseason run and ultimately capturing the state championship.

Both Spring Mills and Jefferson enter tonight knowing what it takes to make a serious postseason run and both know there is unfinished business heading into 2026.

New Faces. New Opportunities.

As exciting as tonight’s matchup is, neither team is simply picking up where it left off last season.

Both programs lost key contributors to graduation, including players who made significant impacts on both sides of the football.

That means tonight will also be an introduction to a new generation of players.

For Spring Mills, one of the biggest storylines will be the first look at new transfers stepping into important roles, including quarterback and running back.

Those are two positions that can completely change the identity of a football team.

The Cardinals will also be counting on some of their younger players to step up when their number is called.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Spring Mills appears to have plenty of talent at the skill positions, and if the new pieces at quarterback and running back can settle in, this team could surprise some people this season.

But there’s one major factor that could determine just how good the Cardinals can be.

Don’t Forget About the Hogs

The offensive and defensive lines don’t always get the attention that quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and defensive backs receive.

But make no mistake:

The game is won in the trenches.

The “Big Boys” up front are often the most overlooked players on the field and some of the most important.

If Spring Mills’ offensive line can create running lanes, protect the quarterback and give the skill players time to make plays, the Cardinals could become a very dangerous football team.

The same can be said defensively.

Control the line of scrimmage, and everything behind it becomes easier.

Tonight’s matchup against Jefferson will be one of the first opportunities to see whether Spring Mills’ new-look roster can live up to the expectations surrounding this team.

The First Chapter of 2026

Tonight isn’t going to decide the season.

But it can tell us a lot.

Can Spring Mills continue its recent dominance over Jefferson?

Can the Cougars put last season’s slow start behind them and start 2026 on a completely different note?

Which new players will emerge?

Which young players will make their presence felt?

And perhaps most importantly which team is ready to establish its identity first?
