Sweet Revenge: Spring Mills Gets Redemption with 46-28 Win Over Wheeling Park

Sometimes, the best victories are the ones that come with a little bit of redemption.

After falling to Wheeling Park 33-28 last season, the Spring Mills Cardinals traveled to Wheeling Park on Friday night with an opportunity to settle the score. This time, the Cardinals made sure the outcome was different.

Spring Mills walked into Wheeling Park’s home stadium and came away with an impressive 46-28 victory, earning some sweet revenge while making a statement against one of West Virginia’s talented football programs.

Chris Williams Leads the Cardinals’ Ground Attack

Spring Mills was led by an outstanding performance from Chris Williams, who carried the ball 22 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams consistently found running lanes and made the most of his opportunities, providing the Cardinals with a physical and reliable presence in the running game throughout the night.

The Cardinals also got a huge performance through the air from Douglas “DJ” Mayer.

Mayer finished the game with seven catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns, including one of the most exciting plays of the night. On his way to the end zone, Mayer made a nasty juke move that left two Wheeling Park defenders looking for their ankles before using his 4.4 speed to break free and find the end zone.

Senior Jacob Long also made his presence felt, finishing with three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

The Defense Creates Big Plays

Spring Mills received major contributions from its defense, which came up with several momentum-changing plays throughout the night.

Kheelan Curry came up with a huge interception in the end zone and took it all the way up the right sideline for a touchdown. The defensive score was another example of the Cardinals making big plays on both sides of the football.

Another huge defensive sequence involved a pair of sophomores.

Sophomore defensive end Jeremiah Wang created a turnover by forcing a fumble, and sophomore Jayson Johnson, who usually wears No. 9 but was wearing No. 13 for this game, was in the right place at the right time. Johnson scooped up the loose ball and returned it 33 yards before being tackled from behind.

The play was a great example of Spring Mills’ young players stepping up and making an impact in a big road victory.

A Tale of Two Halves

Spring Mills came out firing and quickly jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

However, Wheeling Park refused to go away.

The Patriots leaned heavily on running back Hunter Miller, who carried the ball 30 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Miller did a significant amount of damage during the first half and helped Wheeling Park battle its way back into the game.

Wheeling Park eventually tied the game, setting up what would become a much different second half.

At halftime, Spring Mills made the necessary adjustments.

The Cardinals’ defense did a much better job of slowing down Wheeling Park’s rushing attack in the second half, forcing the Patriots to rely more heavily on the passing game.

Wheeling Park quarterback Jay Bordas finished the night 24-of-35 passing for 286 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

While Bordas and the Wheeling Park offense were able to make plays through the air, Spring Mills’ defense stepped up when it mattered most.

Defense Makes the Difference

Ultimately, the difference in this game was Spring Mills’ ability to make adjustments and elevate its defensive play in the second half.

After giving up significant production on the ground during the first half, the Cardinals tightened things up and slowed down Wheeling Park’s rushing attack. That forced the Patriots into a different style of offense and allowed Spring Mills to regain control of the game.

The Cardinals made plays offensively and defensively throughout the night. From Curry’s interception return for a touchdown to Wang forcing a fumble and Johnson’s 33-yard return, the defense created big moments when the Cardinals needed them.

When the final whistle blew, Spring Mills had accomplished something it had been waiting a year to do.

Redemption.

A year after falling short in a 33-28 loss, the Cardinals traveled back to Wheeling Park and left with a convincing 46-28 victory.

Next Up: A Tough Road Test

Spring Mills will hit the road again this week as the Cardinals travel south to take on a very good Liberty Christian Academy football team.

It will be another major test for Spring Mills as they look to build on the momentum from Friday night’s impressive win.
